As if being a teenager doesn’t come with enough hardships already, Bethany struggled through her teen years battling a life-threatening medical condition. Bethany was diagnosed, at the age of 13, with a blood disorder that would change her life forever.
When volunteer wish granters, Sharon and Perry, asked Bethany if she could wish for almost anything – whether it was to have anything, go anywhere, meet anyone, or be anything – snorkeling the open water in the Caribbean was her response. And as it turns out, this was exactly what she needed to give her the strength to battle through the daily struggles of her difficult blood disorder.
After many doctor visits and hospitalizations, Bethany was granted her one true wish to go snorkeling in the Virgin Islands. Before Bethany had embarked on her wish, her volunteer wish granters threw her a pizza party as a wish enhancement. When asked about Bethany’s wish granters, her mother stated, “Sharon and Perry went above and beyond to make Bethany feel like a rock star throughout her entire wish process!”
Bethany’s wish experience was full of surprises. Even when she arrived to her hotel in the Virgin Islands, she was ecstatic to see the hotel room was full of decadent food trays and was decorated just for her! The hotel staff even purchased a paradise picture frame with a picture of her already in it.
During her time in the Virgin Islands, she was able to explore Coral World, where she learned about the many different species of fish and animals that are native to the islands. As she was snorkeling, she was able to swim with sea turtles and see all of the different species of fish and animals that she had learned during visit at Coral World! She also was able to spend time with her family and soak up some sun on the beaches. “She was able to fulfill a longtime dream of seeing Caribbean beaches and snorkeling.” Said Bethany’s mom.
In a post-wish conversation, Bethany’s mother stated that before her trip to Virgin Islands, Bethany was a home body, she didn’t go out much or see her friends a lot due to her condition. After her wish, she was able to gain the hope and confidence to try new and exciting experiences and to be more on her own. “This trip was a great way to enjoy time together and to take her mind off of her upcoming hospitalization.” Said Bethany’s mom.
