Wish kid, Kyra, age 8, was extremely excited about her upcoming trip to Disney World. “I can’t wait to go to Disney with my family to go to the parks and eat ice cream for breakfast” says Kyra.
Kyra is not your typical 8 year-old, she is truly wise beyond her years and has one of the most positive outlooks on life that we have had the pleasure of meeting. Kyra was diagnosed the day after Father's Day last year after enduring many months of painful leg cramps.
Immediately after her diagnoses, Kyra was sent directly to Children’s Hospital to confirm the results of the initial MRI. “Nothing can explain the overwhelming feeling of devastation that occurs when a doctor tells you that your child has cancer”, said Karon (Kyra’s mom).
Kyra immediately started chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumor and underwent Rotationplasty (removal of the tumor by amputating from the knee down) surgery on September 9, 2011.
Unfortunately, Kyra’s most recent PET scan indicates that the cancer has metastasized in her other leg and lower spine. Kyra has started a new round of outpatient chemotherapy for the next month (1 week on, 2 weeks off, 1 week on) with the hopes of killing the new cells. “We are a family of faith and know this is in God’s hands”, says Karon.
