At Make-A-Wish Missouri,
We Work For Them

Braxton
Imagine a child.

They parade around, drawing attention to themselves with their infectious personalities. Sometimes you break and let them have ice cream twice in one day, but for the most part, ice cream is only for special occasions or weekends. You would never trust them to cook dinner for you or give the pets the correct medicine. You have to remind them to brush their teeth and push away their finger when it goes into their nose. It’s a while before they are able to dress themselves on their own in something other than a ninja turtle costume or a princess dress. You would never give them the responsibility of keeping track of your meetings for the week, let alone let them walk across the parking lot without someone holding their hand.

Wish Kid Noah

Wish kid Noah and his family
When Make-A-Wish® Missouri asked me what my one-true wish was, I knew I wanted to meet someone. I only had dreams of meeting people I admired. The first person on my list was Cam Newton because I always liked him and he’s my favorite football player.

From Sister to Staff

The impact of a wish is a heavily implemented belief that we hold here at Make-A-Wish. The reason reflects the countless times we hear this from wish children after their life-changing experiences. It’s easy to focus on the wish kids because, well, it’s about them! However, there’s an overlooked truth surrounding the wish experience: the impact of a wish stretches far beyond the child. Though the wish is created by them and coordinated diligently for them, the wish experience ends up having a lasting impact on not just the wish kid, but all of those involved.

Common Make-A-Wish Misconceptions

Chad now and then
During my orientation at my first day at Make-A-Wish® Missouri, I was asked what I thought some common misconceptions of the foundation were. The first one I could think of, based on my childhood perception of the organization, was that it was only meant for kids combating cancer. Though a handful of the wish kids have and will battle some form of cancer, there is a long list of illnesses that qualify for wish eligibility. I quickly learned, and am still learning as an intern, that other misconceptions surround Make-A-Wish and its mission.

First days suck. For over-thinkers, they really suck.
